Measure over the layers you intend to wear

Compare the jacket with an existing coat worn over a similar shirt or hoodie. Record chest width, shoulder construction, sleeve length and back length. Check whether the seller measures the jacket zipped or open and whether its measurements are flat. Ask for cuff, hem and hood adjustment details. If a bulky midlayer is part of your outfit, check room at the upper arms as well as the chest instead of selecting only by overall length.

Separate style from tested weather protection

A shell-like finish, taped-looking seam or familiar badge is not a waterproof rating. Request the exact fabric specification, seam construction and any model-specific test information before relying on a jacket for rain or technical use. Follow a care method for that construction

Patagonia explains that cleaning suitable waterproof shells can remove oils and dirt, and that label-approved drying helps restore water repellency. Its method is specific to compatible garments. Do not apply shell instructions automatically to leather, wool, down, coated fashion fabrics or a jacket with an unknown membrane. Request the composition and care label before purchase, and check every closure before laundering. If the product has removable insulation, ask whether the outer and liner need separate care.
